Window film was one layer in DCPS’s broader security plan

DCPS described its Half-Penny school-hardening work as a layered program that also included controlled door access, fencing and gates, lighting, cameras and emergency communications. In the district’s prototype work, window film was added as another layer against forced entry and glass damage.

The 15-campus program therefore used different 3M film and attachment paths by opening, including Ultra Night Vision S25, clear Ultra S800, Night Vision 25, Ultra Prestige 50 and 3M Impact Protection Attachment where specified.

Multi-campus program

A multi-year program across 15 campuses

All five schools in Sea Cool’s first annual group appeared on DCPS’s public 2022 security-improvement list. Two more five-campus groups followed, then a separate Paxon entrance enhancement.

Project scope combined Ultra Night Vision S25 and Ultra Prestige 50 on specified glazing up to seven feet, Night Vision 25 above selected mullion lines, and 3M IPA on attached assemblies.

The third group continued the mixed system with Ultra Night Vision S25, Ultra Prestige 50, Night Vision 25 and 3M IPA matched to approved glazing conditions.

The later entrance scope specified both tinted Ultra Night Vision 25 and clear Ultra S800, a practical example of why visibility and appearance matter alongside security.

Why Ultra Night Vision 25 was more than a clear-film choice

Much of the annual program specified 3M Ultra Night Vision S25 instead of only a clear security film. On 1/4-inch clear glass, 3M lists 25% visible light transmission for UNV S25 compared with 88% for clear Ultra S800. In brighter exterior daylight, that lower transmission adds daytime visual screening; it is not one-way or nighttime privacy, because visibility changes with the light balance.

UNV S25 also adds solar control: 3M lists 62% total solar energy rejection, 72% glare reduction and 99.9% UV rejection on clear glass. Its low interior reflectivity is designed to preserve outward views after dark.
