Security film holds glass together when it’s broken, helping turn a quick smash attempt into a slower, noisier event. Delay varies by glass, frame, film, attachment, installation, and force; do not treat a generic time range as guaranteed. The film doesn’t prevent glass from cracking, but it keeps the shards bonded to the adhesive layer so the window remains a barrier even after impact.
3M security films are available in optically clear versions that are virtually invisible once installed. You can also choose tinted options that add privacy and reduce glare. Either way, the film doesn’t alter the structural look of your building, most people can’t tell it’s there.
Security film should not be treated as a replacement for impact-rated openings or code-required storm protection. While it’s not a replacement for hurricane shutters or impact-rated glass in building code compliance, it significantly reduces the danger of flying glass shards. Many South Florida businesses use it as an additional safety measure alongside other storm preparations.
The 3M Ultra S800 is an 8-mil micro-layered security film designed specifically for tear resistance. It features a special thicker adhesive that holds broken glass together more effectively than standard films, and performance should be tied to current product documentation and the specified glass system. It also blocks 99% of UV rays and can reduce solar heat gain, so you get security and energy benefits in one product.
Most commercial installations are completed in 1–3 days depending on the size of the project. We work around your business hours to minimize disruption, many installations happen after hours or on weekends. The film needs about 30 days to fully cure, during which you may notice slight haziness that clears on its own.
